Málaga is continuing to expand its international profile through a new institutional mission in the United States. Representatives from Málaga City Council and Turismo Costa del Sol took part in a series of meetings in Atlanta, New York and Washington, D.C., aimed at increasing the destination’s visibility and creating new opportunities for cooperation.

The programme included meetings with tourism professionals, airlines, media outlets and cultural organisations. Its main goals were to attract more US visitors, promote Málaga’s cultural and culinary offering, and explore potential improvements in air connectivity.

The mission formed part of the ‘De Gálvez 250’ initiative, linked to the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. The project uses the legacy of Málaga-born military figure Bernardo de Gálvez as a way to strengthen the historical, cultural and economic links between Málaga and the United States.

Málaga Promoted to US Travel Agents and Tour Operators

New York was one of the main stops on the institutional tour, where the Málaga delegation held a number of meetings with key representatives from the US travel industry.

Among the most significant appointments was a meeting with the United States Tour Operators Association, better known as USTOA, one of the country’s leading organisations for tour operators.

The delegation also presented Málaga and the Costa del Sol to travel advisors from Virtuoso, an international network specialising in luxury and premium travel.

This market segment is particularly important for the destination, as it includes travellers interested in personalised experiences, culture, gastronomy, wellness and high-end accommodation. These visitors also tend to stay longer and generate higher average spending.

The New York agenda also included meetings with journalists and media professionals specialising in travel, culture and lifestyle. These contacts were intended to strengthen Málaga’s presence in the US media and raise awareness of the destination among potential American visitors.

The promotional strategy went beyond Málaga’s traditional sun-and-beach appeal. The delegation also highlighted the city’s museums, historical heritage, gastronomy, leisure options, climate and quality of life.

New Air Connections Between Málaga and the United States Under Discussion

International air connectivity was another key focus of the mission. In Atlanta, representatives from Málaga and the Costa del Sol met with Delta Air Lines executives to discuss potential connections between the United States and Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport.

During the meeting, the delegation highlighted Málaga’s growing international appeal and the strategic role played by its airport. The airport has become one of the main gateways to southern Spain and an important access point to other Mediterranean destinations.

The meeting also recalled Delta Air Lines’ former direct service between Málaga and New York, which operated from 2008 to 2019.

The return of a direct route, or the launch of new long-haul connections, could help attract more US visitors while also strengthening business and economic relations between the two markets.

Washington Hosts Events Dedicated to Bernardo de Gálvez

The institutional programme concluded in Washington, D.C., with a series of meetings and activities linked to the shared historical and cultural ties between Málaga and the United States.

Bernardo de Gálvez was at the centre of these events. Born in Macharaviaya, in the province of Málaga, he played an important role in the American War of Independence and has become a key figure in efforts to strengthen relations between Málaga and the United States.

The delegation met with representatives from Destination DC and the Smithsonian Institution to make progress on a conference programme scheduled for September.

The planned events will focus on Spain’s contribution to American independence and help increase awareness of Bernardo de Gálvez’s historical legacy.

Málaga’s Fair and Gastronomy Showcased in Washington

The mission also featured a presentation inspired by the Málaga Fair, held at the Spain Cultural Center of the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The event attracted more than 900 attendees from the worlds of business, culture, politics, technology and tourism.

It offered an opportunity to introduce Málaga’s traditions to a US audience and present the city as a dynamic and diverse destination. Gastronomy also played a central role, supported by Málaga’s recognition as European Capital of Gastronomic Culture.

This distinction provides a valuable platform for promoting local products, traditional cuisine, restaurants and the wider culinary scene across the province, particularly in a market showing growing interest in food-related travel experiences.

The United States Becomes a Key Tourism Market for Málaga

The United States has become one of Málaga’s most important international tourism markets. It is currently the city’s leading source market outside the European Union.

In 2025, US visitors generated 89,823 hotel stays and 186,488 overnight stays in Málaga.

The first months of 2026 also confirmed the growing importance of the market. Between January and April, the city welcomed 22,396 travellers from the United States, accounting for more than 49,000 overnight stays.

These figures support the decision to maintain a strong promotional presence in the country. Málaga’s strategy combines tourism promotion with cultural, institutional and business initiatives designed to strengthen its position as one of southern Europe’s leading urban destinations.

Through this latest mission, Málaga aims to increase its visibility in the United States, attract travellers interested in culture and gastronomy, and open the door to new opportunities for direct air connectivity.
