The Blue Pool: the natural swimming pool

There are corners of the province of Málaga where the sound of water replaces everyday noise and where the vegetation creates scenes that seem removed from the passage of time. Among lush forests, hidden waterfalls, and trails that meander alongside a crystal-clear stream, one of those places that have made the Genal Valley one of the great natural refuges of the Málaga hinterland is concealed. There, in the heart of the Serranía de Ronda, the Charco Azul emerges as one of the most surprising images of this environment.

Located on the route of the Quejigo stream, between the municipalities of Jubrique and Genalguacil, this natural enclave is part of a route that stands out for the constant presence of water, the shade of the trees, and the rich landscape that characterizes this area near the Reales de Sierra Bermeja. It is a circular path of approximately seven and a half kilometers that crosses some of the most striking spaces of the Genal Valley.

A route among forests, waterfalls, and natural pools

The Quejigo stream route unfolds in an environment of great ecological value. The stream, a tributary of the Almarchal river and later the Genal river, structures a landscape dominated by pines, ferns, and oleanders that accompany the hiker for much of the route.

The permanent presence of water defines the personality of this path, considered one of the most unique in the Serranía de Ronda during the warmer months of the year. Along the itinerary, small waterfalls, shady corners, and various natural pools add a unique character to the journey.

Vegetation plays a leading role. Tall pines and an abundance of ferns create a cool, moist atmosphere that contrasts with other landscapes of the Málaga interior, while oleanders add color to the stream throughout much of the year.

The Charco Azul, the great jewel of the Quejigo stream

Within this natural setting, the Charco Azul stands out especially, considered the most well-known and photographed spot of the entire route. Despite its name, the water has an emerald green hue that perfectly integrates into the surrounding landscape.

The pool is nestled between rock formations and surrounded by dense vegetation that provides ample shade. This combination of water, stone, and forest has helped describe the place as one of the most striking corners of the Genal Valley.

Two waterfalls pour their waters directly onto the pool, creating a characteristic image that distinguishes the Charco Azul from other natural spaces in the area. The clarity of the water allows the bottom to be seen clearly, creating a visual effect that may make the depth appear greater than it actually is.

The immediate environment is marked by the presence of rocks covered with verdín, a moss that adheres to the walls of the channel and is part of the natural ecosystem of the stream. Alongside them, the stony banks and riparian vegetation complete a scene that has made this place one of the most well-known points of the route.

The Enchanted Pool, another unique spot on the route

The prominence of water does not end at the Charco Azul. About a kilometer upstream another of the most outstanding enclaves of the itinerary appears: the Enchanted Pool.

This natural pool stands out for the presence of a waterfall and a large pine trunk next to it, naturally integrating into the landscape. The combination of the stream, vegetation, and the shade cast by the trees creates a particularly characteristic atmosphere within the route.

The unique Charco de María Teodora

The succession of pools continues with another of the emblematic points of this place: the Charco de María Teodora.

Unlike other spots on the route, this pool has a more defined shape and stands out for the waterfall that falls from a completely polished vertical slab. This detail creates a visual contrast with the surrounding terrain and gives the place its own personality.

The presence of these three spaces —Charco Azul, Enchanted Pool, and Charco de María Teodora— turns the Quejigo stream into a succession of small natural settings where water acts as the main element of the landscape.
