Torremolinos bans swimming at Los Álamos beach

The Torremolinos City Council has banned swimming at Los Álamos beach, following the results of the latest analysis conducted in this coastal area, which show values that make it inadvisable.

The issue is related to the breakage of sewage pipes in Málaga at the end of last year after the Guadalhorce river overflowed. Although it was certified that the water met the required standards, the local administration in Torremolinos has been conducting periodic sampling to ensure there were no discharges.

Following the latest results showing the water is not suitable, and in accordance with current regulations on the sanitary quality of bathing waters, the decision was made to close the beach.

Torremolinos officials have made it clear that they will continue monitoring the evolution of the parameters to adjust the established measures based on the results.

The sanitation in the surroundings of Guadalmar and the mouth of the Guadalhorce, near the golf course, is affected by the obsolescence of the facilities, coupled with coastal regression due to rising sea levels and the effects of river floods. This situation, on the border of Málaga and Torremolinos, led the capital's city council to also ban swimming. The decision came after a communication from the Health Ministry of the Junta de Andalucía recommending the implementation of preventive measures upon detecting the presence of 'Escherichia coli', a fecal bacteria.

Temporary works to address the problem are part of a project to bring regenerated water for the irrigation of gardens and green areas to Churriana and Torremolinos, an emergency intervention within a broader €6.5 million project.
