The Mijas City Council reiterated this Monday to the central government "the urgent need" for the definitive stabilization of the coastline and beaches with breakwaters. "The lack of structural solutions directly affects the integrity and environmental quality of the beaches; the safety and functionality of certain sections, and the main economic activity: tourism linked to the coastline," stated the Mijas City Council in a press release.
In a letter sent by the mayor, Ana Mata, to the General Director of the Coast and Sea of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, Ana María Oñoro, an immediate, clear, and operational response is demanded regarding the integrity of the coastline, about the real situation and the certain forecast of its promotion. In this regard, it is noted that "the current problem is not circumstantial or unforeseen, but structural."
Mata recalls that "the need for a stable solution was identified some time ago and motivated the initiative of the General State Administration to advance in a specific action on the areas of El Bombo and La Cala, but there are no appreciable advances nor an institutional explanation that allows understanding the reasons for this standstill."
Similarly, the text signed by the mayor emphasizes that Mijas "endures year after year the consequences of the regression and instability of its beaches," and "is forced to repeatedly act with sand contributions and palliative interventions, at a high economic cost and provisional scope. It is something difficult to accept."
In this regard, she recalls that the Mijas City Council "has invested 247,000 euros in regeneration works and sand contributions in the last month and a half, after the winter storms left the beaches impracticable." However, the mayor insists that "this effort is annual due precisely to the lack of definitive stabilization."
Thus, Mata requests that the Mijas City Council be informed in writing, "in a complete and detailed manner, of the exact status of the stabilization action processing of La Cala and El Bombo, indicating the milestones already achieved, pending procedures, potential existing obstacles, and the planned schedule for its development."
Furthermore, to advance in solving this problem, the mayor requests an institutional and technical meeting between the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea, the Coastal Demarcation, and the Mijas City Council, "in order to address the issue monographically, know directly the situation of the file and establish a clear, realistic, and verifiable roadmap."
"Mijas is one of the main tourist destinations in Malaga and Andalusia. Maintaining its beaches in adequate conditions is not a minor issue but a basic requirement from an environmental, social, and economic perspective. It is unreasonable that a municipality of Mijas' relevance should continue to periodically face this problem with emergency solutions, while the response remains unmaterialized," concludes the letter.
