Mijas begins the regeneration work on the beaches affected by the storms

The City Council of Mijas has started the regeneration works of the beaches affected by storms by adding 14,000 cubic meters of sand, an action that will involve an investment of 247,000 euros to prepare the coast for Easter, as announced by the mayor, Ana Mata, this Thursday.

The mayor highlighted this during a visit she made along with the president of the Mijas Beach Business Association, Carlos Morales, to the coastal area of El Bombo, where machines have been operating at full capacity for two days, delivering and depositing sand.

The works, which have a deadline of 19 days, focus on the beaches of El Bombo, Calahonda (El Capricho / Alhamar), and Las Doradas, with a planned contribution of 8,000, 3,000, and 3,000 cubic meters, respectively, as reported by the City Council in a statement.

The councilor in charge, Daniel Gómez, specified that the machinery listed in the emergency contract for the beach works includes three articulated trucks, a 20-ton excavator and another of 9 tons, two bulldozers, and a loader.

He detailed that some of the aggregates are sourced from the mouth of the La Cala stream and the east area of the beach with the same name.

Specifically, the project is divided into two lots. The first has been awarded to Verosa Proyectos y Servicios S.L. for an amount of 145,552.21 euros; and the second to Transportes y Excavaciones Arroyo S.A. for 101,640 euros, totaling 247,192.21 euros.

Need for Definitive Stabilization

During the visit, Mata advocated for a definitive solution for the stabilization of the coast with breakwaters and groynes, stating that “this prevents us from having to face such a serious problem every year,” and has requested the Spanish Government to commit to an investment that ensures permanent protection of the beaches.

It is worth noting that the Mijas City Council has been working since the end of the storms on moving sand and stabilization, already carried out on the beaches of El Charcón and El Chaparral, with the Council's own resources through the Operational Services and Beaches departments.

Furthermore, the Mijas City Council is in the midst of reconstructing a section of the Coastal Path that was destroyed by the storms at El Capricho, involving 40 linear meters of walkway that require new deeper pilings and a breakwater to protect it from the sea's surges. This project, executed by the company VGC Global, has been allocated 223,000 euros.
