The winds from storm Leonardo cause damage to the Mijas Coastal Path

The City Council of Mijas has indicated that the night was "complicated in various areas of the municipality," especially along the Coastal Path, one of the points most affected by the maritime storm. In the El Capricho section, "a part of the walkway has collapsed," and moreover, the mayor of the municipality, Ana Mata, has pointed out that "another part of this area has broken off," damage that will require repair once the storm subsides. The strong waves caused by the storm Leonardo also "swept away a beach surveillance tower."

The Council insists on the need to respect the closures and markings in this area. "If white and red tapes are put up, it means that passage is prohibited," the councilwoman emphasized, and lamented that there are still people who ignore the signage despite the obvious risk. For this reason, "pedestrian access to the beaches is being closed" while surveillance of the coast continues.

Meanwhile, Mijas Firefighters and the Parks and Gardens department have been active in areas like Calahonda and Riviera to "remove fallen trees that were obstructing traffic and personal movement," while Operational Services work to "review paths and monitor streams and landslides." All this is carried out with "permanent coordination" between the various municipal areas and emergency bodies, on a day that, as they pointed out early in the morning, is expected to be "very complicated" with orange alerts for rain and coastal phenomena.

The mayor of Mijas has called for caution after a night marked by constant rain and monitoring of the storm throughout the municipality. Although the weather situation was "quite complicated" due to the orange alert, the mayor highlighted that, so far, no serious incidents have occurred beyond those noted.

"We have to say that throughout the night there were no serious incidents," she noted, explaining that the main problems were the "collapse of some of the trees" which caused temporary traffic disruptions and were "quickly resolved." Throughout the night, operational services, Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Local Police worked coordinatedly.

Despite this relative normality, the councilwoman has insisted that the risk is still high. "The most important thing is the danger posed by the fact that it is raining on wet ground," she warned, emphasizing that the accumulation of water on the ground, combined with the wind expected from mid-morning, could cause falls of trees, branches, or unstable elements on public roads.

Therefore, she has directly appealed to citizen responsibility: "From here, I advocate for this citizen responsibility that we stay at home, try to avoid all unnecessary travel." Mata also asked for extra caution in areas with dense tree cover or cornices. "It is going to continue raining and there will continue to be wind," she reminded.

The councilwoman also explained that, taking advantage of the fact that there are no in-person classes today, the Department of Education is reviewing the state of school facilities to check for possible damages. The goal is that, if the alert is lifted tomorrow and educational activities resume, "there will be no problems in returning."

In this regard, the Education councilor, Juan José Torres, has visited the facilities of the various centers. Some leaks have been detected in the María Zambrano and Las Cañadas schools, but they are not of great magnitude. "We are coordinating with the directors of the schools to resolve, through an Education maintenance brigade, any incident that may occur. However, there have been no serious damages, so the students can return to the classrooms with complete peace of mind," Torres explained.

Mata has asked for special caution at river and stream crossings, especially in scattered areas. Although in some places the flow may seem low, she warned that it is just a dangerous appearance, recalling accidents that have occurred in other municipalities due to overconfidence. The mayor concluded by asking the population to follow the official networks of the City Council and Mijas Communication to stay informed and always act with caution.
