Mijas will implement a video surveillance system for public safety, crime prevention, and traffic control.

The Mijas Town Hall has tendered the service for the implementation of a video surveillance system in the municipality, consisting of more than 150 devices for citizen security and traffic control, allocating a budget of 2,182,703 euros plus VAT in 2026, as reported this Thursday by the mayor, Ana Mata.

This was highlighted by the mayor during the presentation of the system, accompanied by the councilor delegate of the Local Police, emphasizing that it will be managed by the municipal coordination center (CECOM) of the local security force.

The video surveillance system has an allocation of 2,182,703 euros plus VAT in the 2026 budget and includes the installation of more than 150 cameras throughout the municipality, especially in the three population centers and main residential areas, among other aspects, as stated by the Town Hall in a press release.

The tender for this project, published on the State Procurement Portal, has a deadline for the submission of offers from interested companies that ends on February 2.

The project is technically designed by a specialized company along with the Local Police, so it includes the features demanded by this force, based on their training and experience. It is an infrastructure that will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with up-to-date technology and prepared for the future.

Protection of people, property, and heritage

More specifically, the system will include cameras distributed throughout the municipality and devices aimed at citizen security located in squares, public spaces, and high-traffic areas, which will be used for crime prevention and the protection of people, property, and public heritage.

Additionally, there will be traffic control cameras and license plate readers, positioned at access points, roundabouts, and entry and exit points of the municipality, which will help identify vehicles, control mobility, and support police investigations when necessary.

“Coexistence, well-being, recreation, and daily life in a city are only possible from a feeling and a reality of security. And that is what we are going to provide to the nearly 100,000 residents of Mijas, because Mijas is a safe municipality, but it will be even safer thanks to this initiative by the government team,” Mata assured.

All the locations have been selected with technical and police criteria, prioritizing the most sensitive points in the municipality. In this regard, Cuevas has reported that the agents in the CECOM “will be able to view images in real time, review recordings, and coordinate resources on the ground more quickly”.

This represents, according to the responsible councilor, a multiplication of the operational capacity of the Local Police, without the need for constant physical presence at each point in the municipality. “It is a tool that improves decision-making and significantly reduces response times,” he explained.

Furthermore, the system is based on high-resolution digital technology, with night vision and video analytics with artificial intelligence. Image transmission is primarily via wireless networks, which reduces civil works, costs, and public disturbances.

Data protection and privacy guaranteed

Moreover, Cuevas has emphasized that this project “strictly complies with all current regulations on data protection and citizens' rights,” so that the video-monitored areas will be properly signposted, and the use of the images will be exclusively for police and administrative purposes.
