The oldest woman in Mijas passes away at the age of 101

The oldest woman in Mijas, Josefa Alarcón, has passed away in the town at the age of 101. The funeral mass and burial took place on Tuesday at 17:30 at La Purísima Cemetery in the village, as reported by the Town Hall.

Better known as 'Josefita', her connection with the town and its traditions has been highlighted, as she was a sister of the Archconfraternity of the Sweet Name of Jesus Nazareno and the Virgin of Sorrows.

The Town Hall has posted a mention of her passing on social media to commemorate Josefa Alarcón, who visited the Town Hall in April 2024 on the occasion of her centenary.

“Today is a very sad day for Mijas. Our beloved neighbor Josefa Alarcón, the oldest woman in the municipality, has passed away at the age of 101,” the Town Hall stated on its social media.

At that “courtesy reception” on her 100th birthday, the town's mayor, Ana Mata, welcomed 'Josefita' along with her family, where she was presented with a bouquet of flowers in a visit remembered as “a show of deep respect and affection that she returned with her charm and warmth.”

“Her passing not only leaves a huge void for her family but for all the people of Mijas. Rest in Peace,” the Town Hall remarked this Tuesday, the day many locals bid farewell to Josefa Alarcón at the mass and burial held at La Purísima Cemetery in Mijas Pueblo.
