Vélez-Málaga’s Teatro Lope de Vega unveils its autumn season: Pasión Vega, Pitingo, Comandante Lara and musicals through Christmas

Teatro Lope de Vega in Vélez-Málaga has unveiled its programme for the final months of 2026, and it will feature some of the biggest names to appear at the venue since it reopened.

Pasión Vega, Pitingo and Comandante Lara will be three of the main attractions in a calendar beginning on 31 October and continuing through December.

But they will not be the only highlights.

Audiences will also find a tribute to local flamenco singer Juan Breva, musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, a charity comedy gala, children’s shows and a flamenco zambomba that will bring the atmosphere of a traditional Jerez Christmas to Vélez-Málaga.

The new season also arrives at an important moment for the theatre.

Since reopening on 20 March 2026, more than 20,000 spectators have already passed through its doors, consolidating in just a few months a cultural venue that had spent years outside the city’s performing arts circuit.

When does the new Teatro Lope de Vega season begin?

The new series of performances will begin on Saturday, 31 October.

That will mark the start of around a month and a half of shows, with a different proposal scheduled for almost every weekend.

The programme has also been designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

There will be music for those looking for major voices, comedy for fans of live humour, musical theatre aimed at families and several productions closely linked to flamenco and Andalusian traditions.

The announced schedule is:

Juan Breva tribute opens the season with Vélez-Málaga flamenco heritage

The first performance will have a distinctly local character.

On 31 October, the Antonio Guerra Company will take to the stage with a production dedicated to Juan Breva, one of the most important historical flamenco figures born in Vélez-Málaga.

The singer, whose real name was Antonio Ortega Escalona, remains closely connected to the cultural identity of the municipality.

Opening this new stage of the season with a tribute of this kind allows the national programme to coexist with references directly connected to Vélez-Málaga’s own artistic history.

It will also serve as the introduction to a particularly busy month of November.

Beauty and the Beast brings family musical theatre to the stage on 1 November

Just one day later, both the genre and target audience will change completely.

On Sunday, 1 November, the theatre will welcome the musical Beauty and the Beast, one of the productions aimed particularly at families.

Children’s and family shows have maintained a regular presence since the Lope de Vega reopened and will continue to feature in the new season.

It will not be the only well-known musical to appear at the venue before the end of the year.

Another familiar production will return later in November after already attracting audiences during the theatre’s first months back in operation.

Pasión Vega brings the songs of Almodóvar’s cinematic universe to Vélez-Málaga

One of the most anticipated performances of the season will take place on 7 November.

Pasión Vega will present Pasión Almodóvar, a show exploring songs associated with the films of Pedro Almodóvar.

Music has always played a major role in the work of the Spanish filmmaker.

Copla, bolero, ranchera, tango and many other styles have accompanied scenes and characters that have become part of Spanish cinematic culture over the decades.

The production explores that relationship between film and song through the voice and interpretation of Pasión Vega.

Her appearance will also bring one of the biggest national names of the final months of 2026 to Vélez-Málaga.

Comandante Lara brings his comedy to the Lope de Vega on 14 November

One week later, the theatre will switch genres entirely.

On 14 November, Comandante Lara will turn the Lope de Vega stage into a space for comedy.

Cádiz-born comedian Luis Lara has become one of the most familiar names on Spanish theatre and auditorium circuits in recent years thanks to his distinctive style of Andalusian humour and a collection of characters that have gained widespread popularity.

His appearance in Vélez-Málaga expands a programme in which comedy has already played an important role since the reopening.

During the first months of activity, the venue has welcomed performers and comedians such as Manu Sánchez, El Selu, Ismael Lemais and El Brujo, alongside musicians and productions from other genres.

Asprovélez moves its Comedy Gala from Torre del Mar

Comedy returns on 28 November, this time linked to a charitable initiative.

The Asprovélez Comedy Gala will move to the Teatro Lope de Vega for this edition.

The event had traditionally been held in Torre del Mar and will now move to the main theatre in Vélez-Málaga.

The change of venue also introduces an initiative closely connected with the municipality’s local associations into the theatre programme.

It will be one of the final events of November before the venue changes atmosphere once again for another family musical.

The Lion King returns after its previous reception

On 29 November, just one day after the gala, The Lion King will return.

The production already featured during the theatre’s first phase of activity after reopening and is now coming back to Vélez-Málaga following the response to its previous appearance.

Its return reinforces the presence of family musicals in the programme.

Within the space of a single month, younger audiences will therefore be able to enjoy two particularly recognisable titles: Beauty and the Beast at the beginning of November and The Lion King at the end.

Pitingo opens December with flamenco, soul and a Christmas atmosphere

December will begin with another of the season’s headline performances.

Pitingo will perform on 4 December with a show created especially for the Christmas period.

The artist has built much of his career around blending flamenco with sounds drawn from soul, gospel and other musical traditions.

On this occasion, that fusion will arrive at the Lope de Vega adapted to the festive atmosphere of December.

It will be one of the main concerts of the final stretch of the year and will open a run of shows increasingly centred around Christmas.

Cantajuegos and clown Tallarín offer a show for younger audiences

On 5 December, only 24 hours after Pitingo’s performance, the audience profile will change completely again.

It will be the turn of Cantajuegos with clown Tallarín, a show designed especially for children and families.

The back-to-back programming reflects one of the main goals of the new season: using the same stage to attract very different audiences.

During a single weekend, a musical performance primarily aimed at adults will therefore sit alongside a children’s show.

A Jerez-style flamenco zambomba closes the main 2026 programme

Andalusian tradition will take centre stage in one of the final major events of the year.

On 12 December, the Lope de Vega will host La Navidad de Manuel de Periquín.

The production will bring the atmosphere of the traditional flamenco zambombas of Jerez to Vélez-Málaga, combining Christmas carols with guitars, handclaps and rhythms deeply associated with flamenco.

Manuel de Periquín comes from a family closely linked to Jerez’s flamenco tradition.

The performance will therefore close a season that begins with a tribute to Juan Breva and ends by looking towards another of Andalusia’s great musical traditions.

More than 20,000 spectators since March

The new programme arrives after Teatro Lope de Vega passed an important milestone during its first months of activity.

More than 20,000 people have visited the venue since it reopened on 20 March.

During that period, the stage has hosted artists including José Mercé, Rosario Flores, Diana Navarro, Manuel Lombo, Paco Candela and Manu Sánchez, among others.

It has also featured flamenco, carnival performances, dance, musicals and children’s shows.

The figure is particularly significant given that the theatre had remained closed for years before the renovation was completed and it returned to Vélez-Málaga’s cultural life in spring 2026.

The theatre as a new tool for revitalising the Historic Centre

Vélez-Málaga Town Hall is also viewing the Lope de Vega as more than simply a cultural venue.

Its location in the heart of the Historic Centre of Vélez-Málaga means that every performance can generate activity before and after the show.

People attending the theatre may also have dinner, stop for a drink, walk through nearby shopping streets or spend more time in this part of the city.

For that reason, reopening the building is also being used as a way to increase visitor numbers in an urban area that has spent years searching for new ways to revitalise itself.

The municipal objective is for culture to contribute both to bringing greater activity back to the streets and to generating opportunities for nearby restaurants, bars and shops.

From a closed theatre to a programme almost every weekend

The transformation experienced by Teatro Lope de Vega during 2026 can be understood simply by looking at the calendar.

In February, the final phase of renovation work was still being announced.

On 20 March, the theatre reopened.

And just over six months later, it is already preparing for an autumn in which nationally recognised artists, family shows, local associations and flamenco performers will alternate on stage almost every weekend.
