September public holidays on the Costa del Sol in 2026: these towns will have local days off

September arrives on the Costa del Sol with the return to school, the restart of normal working routines and the gradual end of the summer holidays. However, the calendar still includes several days off depending on the municipality where people live or work.

Unlike other months, September 2026 has no national or regional public holiday applying to the whole of Andalucía. The non-working days scheduled during these weeks are therefore local holidays established individually by each town hall.

On the Costa del Sol, there are several dates worth marking in the calendar: 7, 8, 14, 28 and 29 September.

Manilva will be the first coastal municipality to enjoy one of these local holidays, while the month will end with consecutive days off in Istán and San Miguel in Torremolinos.

7 September: local holiday in Manilva

The first September public holiday directly affecting the western Costa del Sol falls on Monday 7 September in Manilva.

The date comes immediately after one of the most important weekends in the municipality’s calendar: the Grape Harvest Festival, held this year on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September.

The celebration transforms Manilva village into one of the main meeting points of the weekend, with muscatel grapes, music, a horse riders’ parade and, above all, the traditional grape-treading ceremony to produce the first must of the season.

Monday 7 is officially recognised as a local public holiday, meaning some shops, municipal services and businesses may close or operate reduced hours.

Manilva’s other local holiday in 2026 was 17 July.

8 September: public holiday in Mijas and Málaga city

Tuesday 8 September will be one of the most important dates of the month.

Two major Costa del Sol municipalities will observe a local holiday: Mijas and Málaga city.

Although both have the same day off, each is linked to a different local tradition.

Mijas celebrates the Virgen de la Peña

In Mijas, 8 September is dedicated to the Virgen de la Peña, the municipality’s patron saint.

The day also coincides with one of the key dates of the Mijas Fair 2026, which runs from 7 to 12 September in Mijas Pueblo.

The municipal programme includes several events linked to the patron saint. Traditional bell ringing and mass are scheduled in the morning, while the Virgen de la Peña will be carried through the streets of Mijas Pueblo in an evening procession.

The daytime fair at La Muralla will also begin that day.

Therefore, Tuesday 8 September is a public holiday throughout the entire municipality of Mijas, including not only Mijas Pueblo but also Las Lagunas and La Cala de Mijas.

Málaga celebrates Nuestra Señora de la Victoria

In Málaga city, the same Tuesday is a public holiday for Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, the city’s patron saint.

It is Málaga’s second local holiday of 2026, following 19 August, which commemorates the incorporation of the city into the Crown of Castile and falls during the main days of Málaga Fair.

As a result, 8 September will be a non-working day in the city.

This may affect the opening hours of shops, markets, public offices and certain services, although tourism businesses, restaurants and leisure venues may continue operating under special holiday schedules.

Important: 15 September is not a public holiday in Mijas

There is one important difference compared with some calendars and published September listings.

15 September is not a local public holiday in Mijas in 2026.

According to the official calendar currently in force, the municipality’s two local holidays are 8 September and 15 October.

This distinction is particularly important for anyone organising work schedules, school arrangements, administrative appointments or travel plans around non-working days.

14 September: local holiday in Casares

The next date to note is Monday 14 September.

That day will be a local public holiday in Casares, one of the most distinctive white villages on the western Costa del Sol.

The date coincides with the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a religious celebration also observed in a number of other Andalusian municipalities.

Because the holiday falls on a Monday, Casares will enjoy an extended weekend.

For visitors staying in Estepona, Manilva or elsewhere on the western Costa del Sol, it can also be a good opportunity to explore the historic centre of Casares, located in the hills but only a short distance from the coast.

The municipality’s other local public holiday in 2026 was 3 August.

Istán will have two consecutive public holidays: 28 and 29 September

One of the most unusual cases on the Costa del Sol will occur in Istán.

The municipality has scheduled its two local holidays of 2026 on consecutive days: Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September.

This will create an extended break from the previous weekend for workers whose employment calendar follows the municipality’s local holidays.

Istán lies just a few kilometres inland from Marbella, in the Sierra de las Nieves area, and remains closely connected with the western Costa del Sol despite its mountain location.

The two-day break at the end of September also coincides with a period when the municipality returns to a more traditional rhythm after the peak summer season.

29 September: San Miguel will be a public holiday in Torremolinos

September will end with another of the Costa del Sol’s major patron saint celebrations.

Tuesday 29 September will be a local public holiday in Torremolinos in honour of San Miguel, the town’s patron saint.

The date forms part of one of the most important celebrations in the Torremolinos calendar and is closely linked to the San Miguel Fair.

The municipality hosts a variety of festive, religious and entertainment activities during these days, with particular emphasis on the pilgrimage and events dedicated to the patron saint.

29 September will officially be a non-working day across Torremolinos.

The town’s other local holiday in 2026 was 16 July, coinciding with the Virgen del Carmen celebrations.

What about Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola and Benalmádena?

Not every major Costa del Sol destination has a local holiday in September.

According to the official 2026 working calendar, Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola and Benalmádena have no local public holidays during the month.

Marbella’s local holidays for 2026 are 11 June and 19 October.

Estepona selected 15 May and 16 July, while Fuengirola’s local holidays are 16 July and 7 October.

In Benalmádena, they were set for 24 June and 16 July.

That means September will operate as a normal working month in these municipalities, except where individual companies or organisations follow their own specific calendars.

Other major coastal destinations such as Nerja, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox and Vélez-Málaga also have no local public holidays in September.

The other major coastal municipalities do not have local public holidays during September.

What does a local public holiday actually mean?

Every Andalusian municipality can establish two local public holidays per year.

These are added to national and regional holidays to complete the official working calendar for each town or city.

That is why a date can be a public holiday in Mijas but remain a completely normal working day in Fuengirola, even though the two municipalities are only a few kilometres apart.

It is also worth remembering that a local public holiday does not necessarily mean that every business will close.

In a highly tourism-dependent area such as the Costa del Sol, restaurants, hotels, leisure venues and some shops may remain open, while municipal offices, public administrations and other establishments are more likely to close.

Anyone planning to visit a specific business or public office should therefore check its individual opening hours in advance.

September 2026 will consequently have a very uneven holiday calendar along the coast: from Manilva’s long Grape Harvest Festival weekend to the Virgen de la Peña celebrations in Mijas and San Miguel in Torremolinos, as well as two consecutive local holidays in Istán.
