Munch and Picasso meet for the first time in Málaga: a major exhibition opens this October

Museo Picasso Málaga is preparing one of the highlights of its autumn cultural programme. From 30 October 2026, the Palacio de Buenavista will host the first exhibition to bring the work of Edvard Munch and Pablo Picasso together in a single major show.

Titled ‘Munch-Picasso’, the exhibition will remain open until 28 February 2027 and will feature more than 100 works, including paintings, drawings and prints.

Rather than trying to prove a direct influence between the two artists, the exhibition will focus on the themes and emotional concerns they shared, despite their very different backgrounds and artistic paths.

Two very different artists connected by emotion

At first glance, Munch and Picasso may seem far apart.

Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) became closely associated with psychological intensity and images of anxiety, fear and human fragility.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), born in Málaga, developed a much broader and constantly changing visual language, moving through different periods and helping to redefine modern art.

Yet both repeatedly explored subjects such as love, desire, illness, death, loneliness and existential anxiety.

The exhibition will place their works in dialogue to show how both artists used art to represent deeply personal emotions and psychological experiences.

More than 100 works from major international museums

One of the strengths of the exhibition will be the importance of the loans arriving in Málaga.

The project is being organised with the special collaboration of the Munchmuseet in Oslo and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (FABA).

Works will also come from institutions including the Museu Picasso Barcelona, Museo Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, as well as major international collections such as Tate in London, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, MoMA in New York and Kode in Bergen.

For visitors, this means seeing works that are normally spread across different countries brought together temporarily in Málaga.

A dialogue beyond artistic influence

The exhibition will avoid a simple comparison based on who influenced whom.

Instead, the focus will be on shared themes and parallel ways of confronting modern life.

Both artists broke with established visual conventions and experimented with new ways of representing difficult emotions: fear, desire, isolation, tension and personal conflict.

That approach makes the exhibition less about placing two famous names side by side and more about examining how two artists from different generations responded to surprisingly similar human concerns.

The exhibition is curated by Paloma Alarcó, an art historian with extensive experience in modern painting and previous work on both Picasso and Munch.

‘Munch-Picasso’ will be shown at the Palacio de Buenavista, the historic home of Museo Picasso Málaga in the city centre.

For Málaga, the exhibition represents a major cultural event, bringing together works from some of the world’s most important art institutions while presenting a relationship between the two artists that has never previously been explored on this scale.
