Torremolinos Opens a Gazebo in Tribute to George Langworthy, One of the Pioneers of Tourism on the Costa del Sol
The new structure is located at Punta de Torremolinos, between La Carihuela and El Bajondillo, and pays tribute to the historic Castillo de Santa Clara.
Torremolinos has inaugurated a new panoramic gazebo at Punta de Torremolinos in tribute to George Langworthy, a key figure in the early history of tourism in the town.
The structure is located on a natural viewpoint between La Carihuela and El Bajondillo, one of the most symbolic spots on the Torremolinos coastline.
The project recreates the image of a similar gazebo that once stood at the former Castillo de Santa Clara, also known as the “Englishman’s Castle”, one of the places most closely linked to the town’s tourism heritage.
A Tribute to the Origins of Tourism in Torremolinos
George Langworthy arrived in Torremolinos in the late 19th century and became one of the names most closely associated with the beginnings of international tourism in the town.
His residence, the Castillo de Santa Clara, gradually became a unique accommodation space that attracted foreign visitors and major cultural figures.
Names such as Salvador Dalí, Gala, Pablo Picasso and Luis Cernuda stayed at the site, helping strengthen Torremolinos’ image as an open, cosmopolitan destination connected to the cultural movements of its time.
A New Viewpoint Over the Coast
The new gazebo has both symbolic and practical value, becoming a new place for residents and visitors to rest and enjoy the views.
From Punta de Torremolinos, visitors can take in some of the town’s most representative coastal landscapes, with La Carihuela on one side and El Bajondillo on the other.
The initiative aims to enhance this area as part of the coastal route and as a place closely connected to the town’s historical identity.
Heritage, Tourism and Local Memory
During the inauguration, the Town Council highlighted the importance of preserving the memory of those who helped position Torremolinos as one of the pioneering destinations on the Costa del Sol.
The project forms part of wider efforts to recover heritage elements and strengthen the town’s tourism narrative, connecting its past with spaces that remain part of daily life for both residents and visitors.
