Jorge Rando Museum - First and only expressionist museum in Spain

The Jorge Rando Museum is located next to the Monastery of the Mercedarias, on Cruz del Molinillo Street in Málaga. The building was constructed according to the design of architect D. Manuel Rivera Valentín (1878) and funded by its founder Dña. Mercedes Bisso Vidal. It was inaugurated in 1893 and is considered a landmark building of special artistic interest.

The building's facilities include the convent, the church, the postulate, the caretaker's house, and the school-nursery. It is worth noting the existence in the back courtyard of an extraordinary mandarin tree, planted by the founder of the convent more than 130 years ago.

The Jorge Rando Museum is an active member of this neighborhood community, supporting its visibility and participating in improvements that benefit it. Based on this, in addition to the museum's cultural activities, open-door concerts are held every Saturday at 12 pm inside the church of the Monastery of the Mercedarias with the aim of 'bringing music to the streets'. It also contributes to the improvement of the neighborhood through actions such as tree planting or arranging a bicycle parking area in collaboration with the Málaga City Council.

The Museum is located in the traditional neighborhood of Cruz del Molinillo, in the enclave of the historic Capuchin neighborhood. Cruz del Molinillo Street and its surroundings were part of the first suburb of growth outside the historic center of Málaga, the Fontanalla suburb, the most populated outside the walls. The suburb was protected by a smaller wall along its entire perimeter, and it was home to pottery manufacturers, as evidenced by the toponymy of some current streets, an example of which is Ollerías Street. Pottery activities, of Roman heritage, developed thanks to the availability of raw materials and an abundance of water and expanded to the north and west of the suburb.
